Coconuts. Yum!

I always get excited when talking about food, and there’s nothing as tasty as a fresh and luscious coconut, but beyond the health benefits of putting coconut in your gob, did you know there are some surprising ways you can apply it to your beauty regime?

That’s right! Beauty product makers have been looking to coconuts for the latest ways to make not only beautiful, but also healthy and organic products, and, why not? It’s naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Coconut oil is also an excellent, non-greasy and light moisturizer. It penetrates hair extremely well, and it also makes you smell like an edible coco-bomb.

So what are some ways you can make use of these coconutty super powers? We can think of 10 ways right here!

Highlighter

Seriously. Bear with me here. This might seem like a loopy way to use organic coconut oil, but did you know it serves as a gorgeously subtle highlighter?

Apply your makeup as normal and then when you go to reach for that shimmery powder you call highlighter, stop! Take a tiny dab of organic coconut oil and apply it to the area you want to highlight e.g. your cheekbone. Leave it alone and in a minute it’ll dry giving you a subtle glowing sheen.

Shaving

Usually, when you can’t be bothered getting the cocktail of chemicals called shaving cream, you run the risk of looking like a forest creature.

But, no longer! Coconut oil, being the anti-microbial, anti-fungal, non-greasy and cheap moisturizer it is, makes for a fantastic way to both soothe and hydrate your skin while shaving. Bonus is you also end up smelling super yummy.

Hair Conditioning

At the top we said that coconut oil penetrates hair extremely well so it’s no wonder so many conditioners contain coconut oil, but did you know that women in island nations have been doing this for centuries? And there’s a reason for coconut’s popularity to this day. Coconut oil not only penetrates hair better than mineral and sunflower oils, but it also prevent protein loss that can lead to hair loss.

Massage it through your hair before wrapping it all into a loose bun. You’ll want to then wrap your hair with cling wrap to boost the effect of the coconut oil. Leave it in for up to 2 hours before rinsing it gently with warm water. Place a soft towel on your pillow before you sleep, then in the morning, shampoo gently and enjoy your soft, bouncy hair!

Gentle Makeup Remover & Moisturizer

Because of coconut oils naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and moisturizing properties, it’s no surprise that it makes a fantastic night time makeup remover and moisturizer. Simply rub in gentle circles to remove makeup then wash off these residue with your favorite cleanser!

You can also use it more generally as a moisturizer. Studies have shown that virgin coconut oil can aid in healing skin and help reduce moisture loss.

A Luxurious Body Scrub

You know those expensive spas that tout all natural hand made body scrubs? I’ll let you in on a little secret, making those body scrubs isn’t rocket science. You can do it right at home!

Simply melt 1/2 cup of organic virgin coconut oil gently in a pot at very low heat. Add 1/2 cup of granulated sugar (you can use brown sugar for a finer texture) and finally add a teaspoon of vanilla extract (not essence) and you will have a scrub so yummy that you will want to eat it before it even reaches your skin!
