Celebrate #EarthDay with Organic Masks

Earth day is all about looking after the environment. It’s important because not doing so not only harms ourselves, but also future generations. We already use too many chemicals in our daily lives and we’re exposed to so many through pollution.

But that doesn’t mean we should let ourselves go. So let’s celebrate how the environment nourishes us and pamper ourselves this #EarthDay with 3 of my favorite entirely organic wash off masks from Skinfood! Not only do they smell and feel great, but you will be amazed how good you feel afterwards.

This Black Sugar and Manuka Honey mixture is super effective and smells like something Winnie-the-Pooh would want to dig into. Coarse Black Sugar provides natural exfoliation, while Manuka Honey is known as the most nourishing type of honey in the world. It’s antibacterial to help ward off pimples and soothes burnt & dry skin. Perfect for #summer!
Enter the power scrubber! Skinfood’s Roasted Black Sesame Hot Scrub. Packed with minerals and natural oils, not only does it exterminate black and white heads, but it also makes your skin feel smooth and supple after using it. Just don’t use it in the sauna. The label says it will literally overheat.
This might be my favorite wash off mask of them all. Black Sugar and Strawberry, it’s perfect for clearing blackheads and whiteheads from sensitive skin, while gently exfoliating. The real strawberry in this mask also lightens dark spots and acne scars, as well as tightens your skin. Bonus! It smells like strawberry jam too! Mmmmmm…
For everyday cleansing don’t forget our Organic Konjac Sponges. Made entirely from the root of the Konjac Plant, they’re 100% organic and biodegradable and I love how it deeply cleanses my sensitive skin without irritating it! Use with your favorite cleanser to super charge it.

That’s it for this Earth Day ladies! If you have any other organic skincare regimes and products you use I’d love to hear about them below in comments!

5 reasons why YOU need a konjac sponge

They look like a cupcake that’s lost it’s top. But they don’t really taste like one. Trust me, I know. Even though we call Konjac Sponges, sponges, they are really a potato-like vegetable. Japanese people still eat them.
Taking care of our skin is a growing concern these days. There’s lots out there that does that for us. Some things rotate. Some of them oscillate. Some of them buzz. None of them have been used for thousands of years though.
And it’s no wonder. These 100% natural, squishy skincare miracle blobs are packed with vitamins, including A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, as well as proteins, lipids, fatty acids and minerals like copper, zinc, iron and magnesium, which you don’t lose through the freeze drying production process.
I’ve been using one daily and my skin now has a noticeable glow to it! And my acne seems to have subsided.
Still not convinced? Here are 5 other reasons to buy into a konjac sponge today.

Fight that acne

Got acne? I know how embarassing it can be, and, like me, you’ve probably tried every remedy under the sun! While some people or more sensitive than other, the basic triggers for acne are always the same. Bacteria, dirt, white and blackheads, and excessive oil are perfect ingredients for a juicy zit to form.
Konjac sponges are naturally antibacterial and pH balancing, and it’s flexible fibrous makeup makes it ideal to deeply cleanse skin.

Sunny complexion

Because Konjac sponges are such great and gentle exfoliators, the more you use it the more smooth and radiant you complexion is going to be!

Long Lasting Makeup

I’m like you. I look for makeup to be long lasting without considering what’s going on with the canvas it’s being put on. But since using a konjac sponge as part of my skincare regime I’ve noticed that most makeup lasts longer than it used to. Why? Well it turns out that flaky skin is not a great surface for holding onto makeup. When you apply it, it just feels dry, chalky and refuses to stick. Regular use of a konjac sponge fixes this by removing all that flaky, dead skin.

Cleanse without Drying

So you come home and you feel oily. You don’t want a break out, so you immediately break out the high powered cleanser. You’re skin feels like a brown paper bag after it, but at least it won’t break out, right? Wrong.
Harsh cleansers that dry out your skin can actually make the problem worse, as your skin attempts to rehydrate, sometimes it can overcompensate. Result? Breakout.
Konjac sponges deeply cleanse without drying out your skin. You can use it with your regular cleanser or cleansing water for an even deeper cleanse.

Sun Repair

I love a bit of time outside in the sun as much as the next non-vampire. But sometimes when you’re done, you’re all sticky from sweat mixed with that ultra high SPF waterproof sunscreen you put on. Ew… Am I right? Konjac sponges help get rid of that stubborn gunk that normal cleansing wont.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear sunscreen at all (collagen breakdown ladies, it’s the devil!). But let’s say you forgot to pop some on and you’re starting to feel that warm burn you get before you turn bright tomato red. Konjac sponges are also great for sunburn! They get rid of that dead skin you accidentally cooked off and they’re so gentle that you’ll barely notice the pain. Wince.
If you can’t tell, I love konjac sponges. In fact, so much, that we’re giving them away at our store for a limited time!
Check them out here and please, let me know how you go with them in the comments below.

Your Ticket to Flawless Skin. Naturally.

If you don’t know my squidgy little friend, the konjac sponge, then you’re in for a treat. This, ladies, is your ticket to flawless skin. Naturally.

They’re made from the root of the konjac plant, which are like potatoes. In fact, Japanese ladies have been using them for over 100 years. I wonder who was the first to decide that rubbing a potato on their skin was a good idea. Well it worked, and these days we hand make our konjac sponges from the same vegetable fibers!

After grinding, cooking and then freezing the konjac root, you get an extremely gentle, yet effective exfoliator and cleanser for your skin. They come in two sizes, large ones for use on the body, and smaller ones for use on the face.

Not only are they soft enough for babies, but if you have sensitive skin or a skin condition, konjac sponges are perfect for you! While they won’t wipe away makeup like the strongest makeup removers, they do remove  a surprising amount in less than 2 minutes.

Leading retailers normally sell them for between $10 to $15, however, we’ve found a secret stash of them that we’re practically giving away at $6!

Hurry up and tell me how to use the Konjac Sponge already!

Once you’ve gotten your konjac sponge, you may notice it might be wrinkly, dry and hard. That’s ok. If it isn’t, then, that’s ok too.

Wet and rinse it in warm water until it’s completely soaked, soft and squishy. No more than 15 to 30 seconds.

It should look a bit like this:

Then simply massage your face with the flat side in a circular motion. You should notice it removing makeup, dirt, and dead skin, leaving your skin noticably lifted. I usually feel a bit more perky after a session with the konjac sponge!

To clean it, rinse it in warm water once again and squeeze it between your hands to get rid of excess water. Do NOT twist, pull or scrunch up the konjac sponge as that will cause it to wear out faster.

Hang it up by it’s string in a dry place and let it dry out completely before reusing.

And that’s it. It’s that simple.

What about my cleanser?

If you wish, you can use a little gentle cleanser with your konjac sponge, but it isn’t necessary. Simply add to to your sponge after rinsing and massage as normal. You might need to use some proper makeup removal to get rid of eye makeup and mascara, but your konjac sponge on it’s own takes care of the rest.

How long will my Konjac Sponge last?

Your konjac sponge is basically a sponge made of potato. A magic potato, but a potato nonetheless, so, like anything of nature, it must come to an end at some point.

Depending on how often you use it, it will last about 2-3 months. Like any sponge, even with careful use and full drying between uses, it can harbor bacteria. Every so often, or if you have used it after a breakout, make sure to soak your konjac sponge in 80C (175F) water for at least 5 minutes, and no longer. Very hot water will break down the fibers in your konjac sponge over time, and no one wants mash potato as a cleanser.

When your konjac sponge begins to break apart, unfortunately, you’ll have to dispose of it and get a new one. But because it’s 100% natural there are so many uses you can find for it!

Place under the stems of cut flowers or the roots of potted plants for all day moisture for your leafy friends! Pop some fast growing seeds on your damp konjac sponge and place it under sunlight covered with a glass bowl. Moisten every so often and watch those babies grow!

Finally, used body sized konjac sponges make amazing bar soap holders. If you sprinkle them with baking soda while damp, they also make great natural odor neutralizers!

I love my konjac sponge. It’s been amazing my skin that’s as sensitive as mine. How about you?

I’d love to hear from everyone what their experiences were with their konjac sponge!
