Now, back to Veep…

Face Masks. The gloriously lazy facial.

Wouldn’t we all love to have our significant other apply a facial and then clean it up for us at the end of the day so we look flawless every morning? Ha! Yeah. That doesn’t happen to me either. But who has the energy to follow through on a South Korean style 10 step skincare routine?

I present to you sheet face masks. Your gloriously lazy shortcut to skincare perfection!

These things come from South Korea are they’re MASSIVE. Korean ladies are addicted to them and they are the instant secret to that prototypical dewy, hydrated skin they all have. They’re a facial on a giant face sized sticker that you can use at home, in the car, on a plane, or while you’re getting ready for work in the morning.

Sheet masks are made from a bunch of fibrous materials so they can soak up all the liquid you find in the packet. That liquid always contains lots of natural ingredients designed to help you with whatever ails your skin. Prolonged use leads to softer, smoother skin! Plus, I love peeling off a mask and feeling refreshed seeing my face hydrated and perky. A trick I often use is to leave them in the refrigerator for a cooling, soothing effect, mmmm…. Delish’.

So while sheet masks are dead easy to use, here are 4 things you should know to get the most out of them.

1. Don’t overdo it

Logic dictates that longer is better, right? If 20 minutes gives you results then 60 minutes must give you results times three. Buh-bow. Your face mask is designed to impart moisture to your skin so over time it naturally will dry out over time. But because they’re made of a super-absorbant fibre, when that happens they start leeching moisture from your skin. So never leave your mask on for more than 30 minutes, and definitely don’t leave it overnight.

2. Don’t just get any mask

Masks are essentially a way to pump a large amount of an active ingredient into your skin over a short period of time. You should look for natural options that are paraben, mineral oil, and synthetics free to lower the risk of irritation. You also need to get the right active ingredients for your skin. So while your reading that ingredient list make sure it contains ingredients that will help rather than hinder your skin.

Finally, before you officially stick that mask on your face, do a patch test of the liquid on your wrist to make sure you don’t react to it. More complex masks or masks with animal derived ingredients can mess with your skin.

3. Use the mask at the right time

While masks are pretty fool proof, they’re never going to be your entire skincare routine in one. For full effectiveness you need to begin with a cleansed and toned surface. Every 4 weeks exfoliate dead skin.

Once you’ve taken off your mask, make sure you leave it for 2 to 3 minutes to get tacky and gently pat the remaining serum to aid absorption.

For really dry skin make sure you use a moisturizer after that has lots of occlusive ingredients. These are things like lecithin, cocoa butter or beeswax and they’re great at sealing in all that hydration!

4.  Face mask clone beauty hack!

You can always pat the remaining serum into your skin with your hands, but that’s so primitive. And without the barrier provided by the sheet, the serum evaporates before it penetrates. So here’s an amazing tip for ya!

Grab yourself some chemical and fragrance free baby wipes. Pull one of them out of the packet and use it to soak up all the remaining serum. Then pop it on your skin for another 20 minutes. Voila! An el cheapo mask!

I love masks. They keep my skin soft and smooth in a cinch. If you are new to masks I recommend trying the Collagen Impact Essential Mask by Mediheal. It’s an essentially moisturizing face mask from one of Korea’s leading, clinically tested skincare makers.
